Councillor Walker joined the army in 1975 and qualified as an electronics technician.

On leaving in 1985 he co-founded a company specialising in the design and manufacture of GRP products for the motorcycle industry. The company, Pyramid Plastics, is still trading and is located on Corringham Road Industrial Estate

He joined the family business, Nettleham Engineering, located in the former Britannia Works for a number of years and sold machinery.

He is now involved with the design and development of products for the self assembly car market.
